The Legion of Vega had been the dumping ground for problem children of the DCMS for more than a century. Even though they grew in prestige after the ascension of Theodore Kurita to the throne, after the Jihad they had once again become poorly equipped and oft-maligned. Even with their better than average results during the Jihad and the fight against the Word of Blake, they remained the last unit to get resupplied and reequipped. As the Combine paid lip service to the Republic of the Sphere, many units were kept barely functional only so the main line regiments (usually the Swords of Light regiments) could be fully armed and equipped.
While this generated some resentment in the Legion, it was also a point of pride for many of their soldiers. They were able to make do with what they had. They were the best of warriors because they did not NEED the better modern machines. Their warriors completed objectives through guts and courage.
Recent History
The Legion went to the school of hard knocks once again as the Ghost Bears, Snow Ravens, Federated Suns and rebel Azami. Matsunari Toranaga prioritized the Swords of Light regiments for rearmament after the initial strikes against the Federated Suns, with the Legion of Vega far, FAR behind. Many units started digging through scraps from the Jihad to rearm their forces, leading MechWarriors to pilot reconditioned Word of Blake machines or more antique Combine machines up to and from the Clan Invasion.
The Legion still had to fight on all fronts during the Davion Reconquista, facing both the neighboring Clan toumans and the Federated Suns forces. The Legion was forced to stay on the move like all other units in the DCMS, which caused exhaustion to pile on the entire unit. By the end of the conflict, the 3 primary commands of the Legion of Vega were depleted in terms of supplies, but not in manpower.
Against the will of the Gunji-No-Kanrei, Coordinator Yori Kurita raised Miyoko Tsukamoto to the rank of Sho-Sho, a first in the Legion (albeit short) history. In her new position, the commander of the 2nd Vega started a plan to replenish the Legion’s forces by expanding recruitment and increasing procurement, raising up to 3 new regiments to replace the lost Arkhab Legions
