Anastasius Focht’s Com Guards did it. They stopped the Clan war machine at Tukayyid with the blood of the people of the Inner Sphere. But is this enough to ensure peace? Sadly, nothing can be further from the truth. ComStar itself is shattered, split into the traditionalists and the progressives, with political and even military struggles between them. The old Anastasius Focht faces against the charismatic, young Cameron St.Jamais. The Successor States, though, have other things to worry about.
The Sphere and the Periphery
Hanse Davion’s heart attack crippled him, leaving him paralyzed. His son Victor has taken the reins of the Federated Suns part of the Commonwealth while his mother rules the Lyran portion, both under the eyes and still keen mind of The Fox. In the shadows, Nondi and Ryan Steiner orchestrate a rebellion against House Davion, trying to bring their niece Katherine with them. Only through the actions of the former First Prince does Melissa Steiner survive an attempt on her life, which triggers a revolution in the Skye Province as Ryan Steiner. Katherine Steiner is forced back to New Avalon before being sent to the Capellan March with her new husband, Kai Allard-Liao.
In the Draconis Combine, Theodore Kurita forces his father Takashi to retire after the old Coordinator challenges the Wolf Dragoons to a duel. Unfortunately for him, he is plagued by constant poking and prodding by the Clan forces throughout his realm while maintaining a broken army after years of abuse. It isn’t until the death of Takashi, assassinated in a monastery, that things take a turn for the worse as the Black Dragon Society attempts to take over the Combine in the name of tradition. House Kurita has to balance their obligations to their people, their personal feelings and an imminent threat from both enemies within and without.
The Capellan Confederation is working on their own alliance as Sun Tzu Liao marries Isis Marik in a private ceremony which also serves as a place to sign a treaty between the Capellan, Free Worlds League, Magistracy of Canopus and Taurian Concordat. While nobody wants to make the first move, all agree that the Federated Commonwealth is a threat to them all. Thomas Marik especially is not ready to act while his son Joshua is undergoing treatment on New Avalon.
The opening blow of what would be the Fifth Succession War begins with the death of young Joshua, a lie by Victor Davion which he was told was a bad idea by both his parents and an ambitious Sun Tzu Liao. Operation GUERRERO leads to many worlds being reclaimed by their former lords, but also to a dogged defense by a bitter old man in the shape of Stephen Davion. The war grows out from there, with fronts opening around the Duchy of Tamarind and the Capellan March at first, a rebellion lead by a former General in the Lyran half of the realm and the constant threat of the Clans.
Even with their treaty, Canopus and the Concordat fight a proxy war in the unclaimed region of space between their realms. While not a massive conflict like the rest of the Fifth Succession War, this opened the “new colonies” to immigration and prepared both nations for what was to come. The Taurian fight against the Federated Commonwealth would yet be another front for House Davion-Steiner to handle.
The Clan Reformation
The loss at Tukayyid was a momentous event for the Clans. The Clans who claimed they were the strongest were humbled by their loss… somewhat. As everyone returned to Strana Mechty, a new ilKhan had to be elected due to Ulric Kerensky resigning after Tukayyid. The Jade Falcons and Smoke Jaguars postured but were beaten back due to their many failures during Operation REVIVAL. The Wolves abandoned the case early, while the Ghost Bears had no strong claim themselves. Finally, the vote came down to the Smoke Jaguars and their few Crusader allies, Clan Coyote as the pick of a few Warden Clans and the rather neutral Clan Snow Raven.
After debates and votes, it came to pass that Khan Lynn McKenna was elected to lead the Clans. Her ideas at first were not revolutionary, trying to strengthen all the Clans in anticipation of a new wave of invasion. Slowly, though, her ideas became more radical in an attempt to make the Clans better, at least according to her. Unlike Luther back on ancient Terra, she did not nail her thesis on the door of the Clan Hall, but it resonated just as hard.
All of the Clans needed to fight. Everyone within the Clans had to fight. This was the basis of what Lynn McKenna had put forward. While each Clan was its own entity, they all served a greater ideal, the dream of the Founder and the Great Father. The waste of fights in between Clans had to be minimized… when they behaved. Internal conflicts were bound to happen, but those were met with extreme prejudice.
With everyone being asked to fight and waste minimized, ilKhan McKenna looked at all the mothballed equipmenet the Clans were sitting on, reactivating all of it. To man this new expanded war machine, more warriors were called up, even though who would have been “failed” originally. The worlds of the Inner Sphere were called up to service, trading their talents for more freedom. To train and blood those new warriors, the fight was taken to the Inner Sphere and the Periphery, as long as it respected the Truce of Tukayyid.
Dissent in the Clan was met with incredible speed and ruthlessness. Many of the Crusader Clans disliked the ideas brought forward by Lynn McKenna. Even the more traditional Wardens hated giving up some of their way of life in the name of efficiency and expediency. But most of the younger crowd, and the Clans that had been left behind in the first invasion, realized that while Kerensky’s vision was for the best, it wouldn’t work for everyone. The Inner Sphere was too big, too diverse, too fractured. It could, however, be brought to heel and serve their rightful rules. The Clans of Kerensky would rule over the Sphere, of that there was no doubt. How they would rule, that was now the question.
A good first step. I would want to see more of why the Wolves gave up so easily. I’m no fan of them, but I don’t like the idea of the Wolves just stepping back. A move like that ends up invalidating anyone else’s win in the narrative sense. The feeling I’m left with is that whoever wins the IlKhan position, they only won because the strongest Clan chose not to play.
