Overview

The Bombardier had always been a sad machine in the arsenal of the SLDF. While viewed as “decently competent” and a replacement / supplement to the venerable Archer, it never reached its potential. Meant to be using expensive speciality ammunition while also remaining fragile due to their XL engine, the Bombardier had almost disappeared from the Inner Sphere by the time of the Clan Invasion. The Clans, however, had abandonned it much earlier, with hundreds simply resting in Brian Caches.

It was Clan Coyote that decided to start a massive upgrade program using existing Bombardier that had been pulled out of caches by ilKhan McKenna’s edict. Other scientist caste had been experimenting with doubling up on the long-range missiles of the Bombardier, but the Coyote had recently unveiled their Advanced Tactical Missiles and fully intended on testing them in real combat sooner than later. Acquiring as many Bombardier as they could, they began experimenting with equipping them with various forms of ATM, with a standard “C” model being unveiled in 3060 for the Coyote to use and even trade to the other Clans if required.

Capabilities

The Bombardier C keeps the original ‘mech relatively high speed for a fire support machine, with a top speed of 86kmph. It also remains heavily armored with ten and a half tons of Valiant Lamellor Ferro-Fibrous. As the ‘Mech also kept its full complement of arm actuators, the Bombardier C could easily punch targets getting too close to it. This was viewed ideal for more aggressive pilots, like Freeborn warriors in Solahma units.

The bulk of the Bombardier C firepower comes from 10 sets of 3-tubes of Advanced Tactical Missiles, with a pair in each arms and a trio in each side torso. A massive 10 tons of reloads allows for ideal ammunition selection. While less “polyvalent” than the original Bombardier that could use a variety of speciality long-range missiles, the Bombardier C was capable of engaging targets at every range effectively. The addition of a specialized missile tracking computer improved accuracy on weapons in the “mid-range” bracket, which was highly effective with the use of ATM.

Like the original Bombardier, an anti-missile system was originally mounted on the Bombardier C but it was replaced by an experimental Laser Anti-Missile provided by Clan Wolf in exchange for 100 machines. As an additional weapon, almost as an afterthought, an ER Medium Laser is mounted in the nose of the ‘Mech.
