Overview

The Mercury was the precursor of all OmniMechs. When Clan Snow Raven ordered the opening of all Brian Caches to reinforce the Clans for the second true wave of the Clan Invasion, Clan Ice Hellion took the opportunity to acquire as many of them as they could. As all the Clans were ordered to produce new and upgraded weapons, the Hellions cut corners a bit and took a page off the old Clan Coyote “Pueblo Initiative”. This then allowed the Ice Hellion to dedicate more ressources on other programs while having fufilled their duty to the ilKhan.

Over the next few years, most Clans started shipping their Mercuries to the Ice Hellion so they could apply the upgrade kit to them. The Merchants of the Ice Hellion took advantage of this to acquire a variety of older, yet quite successful OmniMechs to reinforce the Clan’s touman. By 3065, the Muut had replaced many scouts in the Clan arsenal due to its ease of production and maintenance.

Capabilities

The Mercury had served dutifully within the Star League Defense force, and the scientists and technicians of Clan Ice Hellion did not want to step too far away from the base design. Expansion of the modular weapon system came first, replacing everything with a simple pod system. Armor was upgraded to modern standards and toughened up, turning this scout into a harder nut to crack. The engine was taken from a 160 to a 180 XL, with the musculature tied to a MASC, giving the new Muut (the Owl messenger spirit) a top speed of nearly 190kmph.

While five tons of pod space was not seen as enough early on, the Muut Omni was not meant to be a front line fighter, but an all-purpose scout. Without any “built-in equipment” however, the various touman could adapt it to their needs quickly and efficiently.

The Prime Configuration is a simple rethread of the original Mercury, featuring a pair of ER Medium Lasers and a pair of ER Small Lasers, making this a capable light ‘mech hunter when needed. To provide intelligence to other ‘mechs, both an ECM suite and Active Probe unit is included in the side torsos. It also served as a popular “battle armor taxi” during various test operations and trials.

Deployment

Clan Ice Hellion and Clan Burrock were the first two to add the Muut to their force. They rapidly deployed them to the front and used them in raids against Inner Sphere targets and minor periphery powers. While not incredibly resilient, they performed well in combat against more primitive machines, conventional armor and as transport for Battle Armor forces. What made them popular with commanders was the fact they could be repaired in a matter of hours rather than days for things like the Fire Moth. The lack of pod space to effectively mount jump jets was the only real complaint most officers had at the time.

The other Clans looked at the successful new OmniMech with a bit of derision at first, but Clan Coyote bringing back some of their “Pueblo OmniMechs” with upgrade kits made people more accepting of them. By the mid-3060s, the Muut had been added to most scout units of the Clan military.
