Overview:

Engineer Raymond Amuro was a member on the design team for the Leo, and the prototype Tallgeese earlier. Originally at Achernar, he moved to Terra in the 3140s to work on these new prototypes, but with the collapse of the Republic of the Sphere, he moved back the Federated Suns. He did bring “some” of his
understanding of Operation Zeta with him, leading to a number new designs for the AFFS.

The first true “Operation Zeta” machine, however, was the RX-78 “Revision X-Ray”, which was later named the Amuro afterwards in honor of the lead designer. Compared to the OZ series for Clan Smoke Jaguar, the RX-78 is built using as advanced technology as possible, with survivability being only a far second. Not a large number of them were built, and most of them were given to elite pilots in the AFFS special forces. It performed admirably during the Davion Reconquista and afterwards, with a few joining the Grand Crusade as well.

Capabilities:

The base idea behind the Amuro was to replace the Wolverine and Griffin in the AFFS. It features a top speed of 86kmph normally, with a supercharger giving it bursts of speed up to 110kmph or so. 5 jump jets allow it to bounce 150 meters and get into position. 10 Double Heat Sinks are built in the machine, with the modular system allowing for additional one to be added, like an omnimech. 11 and a half
tons of standard armor cover an endo-steel skeleton, and the cockpit is torso-mounted rather than in the head. To have room to put in the supercharger and a jump jet in the center torso, a Compact Gyro is used. The room saved in the head allows the RX-78 to mount an array of 2 machine guns in the head for
anti-infantry work. To protect the ammo packages for the different weapons, a CASE II is equipped on right torso.

RX-78 Weapon options

As far as “modular, handheld weapons” go, the RX-78 has a number of options:

Heavy PPC: The heavy PPC with a capacitor is mounted in a Griffin-like gun mount. An Angel ECM is mounted on the shoulder, while a small shield is used to deflect attacks. 2 extra heat sinks are slotted in.

UAC/10: A large gatling gun-like gun mount is loaded with a Clan-grade Ultra AC/10, taken from the new JagerMechs. This one has 3 tons of ammo, the same shoulder mounter Angel ECM and small shield.

Sniper: The RX-78 Sniper mounts a field gun like Light Gauss Rifle with 3 tons of ammo. Modernized Light Gauss Rifles are being experimented on to be used on the next variant of the RX-78, the RX-178. This is backed up by a small shield.

Bazooka: The Bazooka configuration uses a Thunderbolt 15 with 4 tons of missile
packages, combined with a small shield.

RAC/5: The RAC/5 configuration loads a large handheld “assault rifle” with 3 tons of reloads, combined with the small shield and shoulder mounted Angel ECM.

Brace: This configuration uses a trio of Medium Variable Speed Pulse Lasers in a “punch laser gauntlet” to be great at short range engagements.

EWAR: The EWAR configuration was built to capitalize on the shoulder mounted Angel ECM by adding a Bloodhound Active probe. The shield is replaced with a BattleMech sword, while the main gun is a Large Re-Engineered Laser backed by a pair of underslung ER Medium lasers. This configuration led to other designs replacing their shield with a sword by swapping equipment around.

Brawler: The brawler configuration has a “sawnoff shotgun” gun mount with a pair of Snub-Nose PPCs, while the other arm mounts a massive machete.

Early design prototypes of the RX-178


A more “modern” and advanced model, the RX-178, has started seeing prototypes. Using Clan-grade endo-steel and XL engine to save internal space, this will increase the overall potential modularity of the design. The head mounted machine gun are replaced by an anti-missile system.

A new custom shield with a built-in Streak SRM4 was also built in an attempt to spread the weaponry to both arms of the design, while the same “standard weapons” are generally available, while new ones are being researched in terms of efficiency.
