Sun-Tzu Liao was born in exile to a half-mad mother and a despondent father. With rather limited means, he still was admitted to the Sun Zhang Military Academy, where he passed mechwarrior and officer training with flying colors. While his mother wanted him to lead a military liberation of her lands, Sun-Tzu was taken under Theodore Kurita as an aide-de-camp quickly after his graduation, and as new First Lord of the Star League, inquired as to what he could do to help him. Sun-Tzu had very limited political desires (unlike his mother) and he began serving Theodore best he could, learning from the older military man.

During the Clan Invasion, Sun-Tzu Liao was at the front with various SLDF forces to report to the First Lord, and gained significant experience in “gaming the system” when faced with Clan forces batchall. During the pause of military action by the Clans, Sun-Tzu went to Outreach where he met with his cousin, Kai Allard-Liao, with which he developed a quick bond of friendship even though his mother would never forgive him for that. After the death of Mackenzie Wolf and the deposing of Jaime Wolf, Sun-Tzu Liao was appointed new general of the SLDF Wolf Dragoon Division.

At the Battle of Luthien, Sun-Tzu led the Dragoons in the defense of the capital, but he failed to rescue Takashi Kurita, for which he felt great dishonor, but First Lord Christian Mansdottir put him back in place claiming his actions might have still saved the Draconis Combine and possibly much of the Inner Sphere.
