Nikol Marik is the current Captain-General of the Free Worlds League during and after the Battle of Terra. A shrewd woman who first wanted to be a MechWarrior but that was thrown into politics by her mother, Nikol Marik works diligently to maintain the Free Worlds League. Far from its power during the Succession Wars, House Marik is caught between many enemies, and Nikol Marik is trying to parse which are the biggest threats. Sadly for Nikol Marik, she might also learn that the biggest threat to a Marik is another Marik.
War against the Empire and Marian War of Aggression
Nikol Marik knew from the new of the destruction of the Republic of the Sphere that things were going to get difficult for the Inner Sphere. While she refused the advances from the Wolf’s Dragoons into supporting their private war against the Wolf Empire, Fontaine Marik (internal) led a vote in the parliament to commit forces to reclaiming worlds near their border. In response, Nikol Marik guaranteed the independence of the Clan Protectorate, even as Rikkard (internal)’s reborn Nova Cats moved to support the beleaguered Wolves. To her surprise, Fontaine agreed with that decision.
Nikol Marik was careful in her attacks against the Wolves and reclaimed a number of worlds for the Provinces, but none which were viewed as “critical” to Clan Wolf. Strikes against Lyran targets did happen during that period, but Nikol sent entreaties to Trillian Steiner (internal), who was just as scared of starting a major war between the major local powers.
With the Wolves more concerned with hunting down the Wolf’s Dragoons, Nikol was content with the ongoing process until she received news that the Marian Hegemony had mobilized troops into the Free Worlds League. Ignatius O’Reilly (Internal) was accusing Fontaine Marik of having his wife murdered and was seeking retribution. Nikol saw this as a great opportunity to pull away troops from the Wolf Empire and resolve “that war”. Politically astute, Nikol used various diplomatic means to calm down the Marian’s expeditionism, but the situation was defused by Fontaine Marik leading a force directly to eliminate the threat. This won him some accolades from the Parliament, which he refused to take while redirecting the glory to Nikol’s older brother, Christopher.
No bigger threat than another Marik
Nikol Marik was learning now what it meant to be a Marik at the head of the Free Worlds League. Fontaine and Christopher were manipulating their way into having a new election for Captain-General, with Christopher being the lead candidate. While Nikol had been a successful since the passing for Resolution 39, her popularity had waned due to her limited actions in both the war against the Wolves and the Marian. Fontaine was incredibly popular, but he was not the one seeking election, however. Christopher was a competent military officer, but he wasn’t a known figure.
Another unknown factor was Kenyon Marik’s (internal) own new bid of election, offering something the League didn’t have at this point with 3 potential heirs from his wife, Ana Graham-Marik. While none of the 3 “candidates” (even though there wasn’t an election called yet) wanted to get into a shooting war with each other, many analysts looked at this as yet another example of the weak leadership of the Marik family. This was contrasted by Ari Humphreys (internal) strong leadership in the Duchy of Andurien, especially as the health of Ilsa Centrella was vacillating.
War of the Reaches
During the War of the Reaches, Nikol Marik used her diplomatic means to support the Fronc Reaches financially and politically, but not committing any forces to their defense. When it became better known that the war had been started by Andurien and Canopus, pressure quickly grew against Nikol as she had supported “enemies of the state” by proxy. Kenyon Marik was the one to take advantage of this situation the most, organizing a censure vote on Resolution 39 to have it reversed, which passed in late 3153. While no election was scheduled immediately, Nikol had to figure a way out of her predicament if she wanted to remain as the head of the League.
