The Head of M.A.R.S. (Military Armament Research Syndicate), a BattleMech and advanced technology firm about 50 years ahead of their time, James McCullen took over from his father, James McCullen XXXXIII after his untimely demise during the Andurien Civil War, where he gained a hatred for the politicking of the Inner Sphere. When he met with Thomas Marik, McCullen understood that Cobra was what he had hoped for as an organization which could bring lasting peace to the Inner Sphere. The fact Cobra became the biggest client of M.A.R.S., and their affiliate companies all over Gibson, made McCullen a richer man at the same time, so this was a great bonus as well.

Destro is an honorable man, however, and while he is ruthless, he respects his enemies, especially the Joes and the Clans. This leads to many odd situations, where he lets his enemies go even though his master wants him to exterminate them. Destro also has ambitions far greater than to remain “just a weapon supplier” for Cobra and sees himself as the leader of Cobra, not knowing of the existence of the Cobra-La. He is madly in love with Katherine Steiner and would do anything for her, and also to gain more of her favors. He is extremely jealous of Thomas Marik‘s relationship with the woman, and this is often a motivation for him to ignore the orders of Cobra Commander and act on his own.
