Overview

Unlike many of the ‘Mechs brought out by the Clans during the Reformation, the Hermes was built to specifications after the Clans noticed they were missing an important asset the Inner Sphere had: the (albeit rare) Firestarter. While OmniMechs could be configured for the Firemech role, most warriors found the task to be below them. On top of this, there was not real second-line machine to fit the role, with many pilots having to use pulse lasers to start the necessary fires instead of the standard flamers.

The Hermes was a rare machine in the Clan inventory. Many of them had been used as training machines during the Golden Centurty, and were now run down and broken down. The few that were pulled out of Brian Caches had “nothing going for them” as light ‘mechs in this range were already omnipresent with things like the Talon, Hussar, Sling… The existing ones were revamped, had their internals reworked to modern Clan standards and put back in the hands of sibkos.

It wasn’t until Clan Hell’s Horses had to fight in the Chainelane Islands during Operation ISLANDHOPPER that the necessity for a firemech really came up. A group of partisans and terrorists loved to hide in the jungles on Haublan before executing suicide attacks against Hell’s Horses guard posts. Quickly, the request reached the Homeworlds and the ilKhan Council put their own scientists on the matter. Requests for a firemech had been coming in from a variety of other commands and the requirements of “a Firestarter of our own” had grown.

Not many of them would be needed, and that is where the Hermes came in. There were not MANY of them, but there were ENOUGH of them. Major adjustments were required to make it “Firestarter Enough”, removing the MASC and making the engine smaller to allow for a full set of jump jets to be mounted. It quickly became a hit amongst all the touman, with the Hell’s Horses receiving the first batch of converted Hermes to assist them in the pacification of Haublan… before Khan Malavai Fletcher made a nuisance of himself.

Capabilities

The Hermes C, or “Agni”, mounts an XL 210 engine to allow it to reach around 118kmph on ground, which many would consider “slow” for a Hermes. This is supplemented, however, by a full suite of Jump Jets, allowing it to jump 210 meters, evading fires it intentionally sets. It also remains heavily armored with five and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor covering a reconditionned endo-steel chassis. The targeting array is tied to an Active Prove to allow it to find hidden targets and mines.

For weapons, each arm features a pair of Flamers and a Small Pulse Laser, ideal for starting blazes in woods, jungles or even buildings. This combination also makes it quite deadly against unarmored targets, even though it is not its official role. Against harder targets, a pair of torso mounted Medium Pulse Lasers allows for precise and devastating strikes.
