Overview

The Excalibur had been a fire support and sniper ‘Mech in use by the Star League since the early 27th century. It had been popular with specialists, commandos and special ops units over time. It served admirably during the time of peace of the Star League, but it really shone during the Amaris Civil War. While many decried the low armor on the base model, the “Royal Upgrade” which was in use by the SLDF Royal Regiments had significantly tougher skin. Not the most common machine out there, a decent number of them went with General Kerensky in the Exodus.

Many of those machines had been used during Operation KLONDIKE and quite a few had survived, with Clan Wolf building an “Early Clan” upgrade kit for them during the Golden Century. While they were used for a short time then, they were replaced by more advanced IIC machines and OmniMechs quite quickly. The remaining machines were mothballed or used in training new warriors until they basically were forgotten.

As the Reformation began, Clan Burrock and Clan Wolf took an interest in reconditioning many of those old Excaliburs, with the Burrocks taking a more aggressive approach than the Wolves. Striking a deal with Clan Coyote to acquire and test the Advanced Tactical Missile systems, the Burrocks turned the Excalibur into a brutal brawling machine meant to break enemy battle lines, closer to its “commando” role than its support role.

Capabilities

The Burrock version of the Excalibur C mounts 11 tons of ferro-fibrous plates to maximise its protection, giving it 20% more coverage than the original Royal Excalibur. This makes it almost have the maximum potential armor on a 70 ton ‘Mech, a far cry from the original Excalibur B2. Mobility is enhanced by borrowing a full set of Jump Jets from the now antique Summoner OmniMech, which ends up allowing the Excalibur to rapidly reposition when required.

The main weapon on this new variant is arguably the massive 12-tubes of Advanced Tactical Missiles on its shoulder, allowing it to dictate range while staying in the engagement. At closer range, it packs a massive 20-class LB-X autocannon which is meant to simply crush targets under a volley of cluster rounds. The targeting and tracking system is refreshed, allowing it to track up to 200 targets at the same time.

Clan Wolf wanted to start producing an Excalibur of their own, but it quickly competed with their new Punisher OmniMech. Their various Excalibur were traded to the Burrocks for concessions on “unmarked Inner Sphere materials”, along with some of the Burrock’s own upgrade kits.
