Overview
Quikscell Speciality Manufacturing launched the HDV-0O Helldiver “omni”mech to great acclaim. At least, from their shareholders and their trade partners. Without an actual sales contact in 3112, the first 36 Helldivers walked off the assembly yard, ready to face the world. They had no idea just how much of an impact the design would have.
Not because it was revolutionary, or advanced, or something you would build an entire planetary defense around. No, the Helldiver was what analysts would normally call “a shitbox”. It was nowhere near the performance of any “regular ‘mech” available for sale during the Late Republican Era. It was an OmniMech for sure, but it simply did not match the performance of anything on the market at the time. No SERIOUS military organization would ever want to buy them.
AND YET. Mercenaries, “alternate military units”, planetary militias and corporate security forces jumped on the new OmniMech once it showed it was just good enough. Could you fight a Clan omnimech with it? No. Could you win in a brawl against a FedSuns new advanced war machine? Also no. But could you scare a bunch of farmers with it? Yes. Would protestors stop protesting if you doused them in chemical OR fusion-powered flames? Yes.
Capabilities
Compared to many machines of the era, the Helldiver HDV-0O is very simple. The most complex thing on it is the endo-composite structure and the XL Gyro which controls the Vlar 300 engine, produced under license by Quikscell. Everything on this machine, actually, is “produced under license”. The targeting array and comm system is actually taken from a Kuritan Dragon, LAW getting kickbacks for every unit delivered. The armor is 12 tons of simple StarSlab-3, which can be replaced in a jiffy. While the chassis is “proprietary”, all the components in it are made from existing products, from the myomer controller to the 12 double heat sink cooling system.
18 tons of pod space is not a whole lot of a 60 ton machine, and saying those are “pods” is somewhat of a misnomer, as it often enough is closer to “handheld weapons”.
Prime
Prime configuration carries a Rotary AC/2 with 2 tons of reloads as its primary weapon. Opposite this, it carries a 10-rack LRM again fed by 2 tons of ammo. Quikscell actually thought of the pilot in this case, putting the ammo feed in CASE bins.
Alpha
Alpha configuration is more of a brawler, with 2 Medium Lasers (or ER Medium, if you pay them extra) mounted on each arm. On the shoulders, you have a pair of Artemis-IV guided MML-7, generally loaded with a ton of LRM and SRM. Or you know, no Artemis and more ammo. You do you, booboo.
Bravo
Bravo configuration is a siege breaker configuration. Each arm mounts a pair of Light PPCs. Against infantry, each side torso mounts a Small X-Pulse Laser (or a small pulse, if you can’t afford the better ones). To make the whole design tougher, a ton of Modular Armor is added to each side torsos and arms.
Charlie
Charlie configuration is silly, but very popular with less reputable organizations. The main weapon is either the arm mounted Claw, or the shoulder mounted rapid fire Ultra 2-Class Autocannon. On the opposite arm, you have a pair of Heavy Flamers, making short work of infantry and armor.
Delta
Delta configuration is somewhat of a sniper. Each arm mounts an ER Large Laser, or a regular Large, again, depending on how much you pay. Shoulder-mounted is a Thunderbolt 5 launcher. Delta also mounts 4 Jump Jets to give it a 120 meters jump range for rapid repositioning.
Groell Special
The “Groell Special” was built for the Robinson March Militia, and features a LB-10X autocannon with 2 tons of reloads as its main gun. Opposite this is a pair of ER Medium Lasers for closer range engagement. A 4-tubes SRM is used to exploit holes in armor and take out Combine tanks.
Deployment
By the time of Davion Reconquista, a number of AFFS regiments had begun purchasing Helldivers as a simple “stop-gap” machine to fill up their battle line. Lieutenant-General Groell was the biggest proponent of Quikscell Speciality Manufacturing. With her support, the factories on Sauk City produced more ‘mechs in a single year than they had in the previous decade. The Robinson March Brigade needed machines to fight the Combine. Anything cheap, easy to repair and easy to refit was viewed as massive plus. Wilhelmina Groell even had a special pod kit designed for her own unit.
The Kuritan forces did not feel particularly threatened by the cheap 60 ton machine they were facing. The problem was, however, that you could rebuild one for every 2 you lost. An amazingly simple machine, refits and pods installation could be done faster than the Combine could arrange battle lines and formations. Soon, every unit in the former Robinson Rangers piled those together without a care.
Variants
Quikscell has been thinking of “upgrading” the Helldiver HDV-0O and making the HDV-1O, using more advanced materials. Quikscell has acquired an endo-steel production facility around Sauk City, and people theorize they will be using it to build these new machines.
Notable ‘Mechs & MechWarriors
Vanessa Sinclair:
Lieutenant Sinclair serves in the First Robinson Strikers, and was the first one to receive a Helldiver HDV-0O after the Battle of Robinson. Having lost her Rifleman, Sinclair was unhappy with her new assignment. She did everything she could to “lose” her Helldiver, rushing headlong into battle. The result was
actually the opposite of what she expected. Her Kuritan opponents quickly became terrified of her red and blue Helldiver, which she had customized “for her own need”. With 9 confirmed kills during the Reconquista, Lieutenant Sinclair got a promotion to Captain and put in charge of training new pilots on the omnimech.
