Dorothy Kern was the commanding officer of the 17th Donegal Guards, starting in 3143 until the disastrous events of the invasion of the Wolf Empire. A down to earth woman, Kern is better known for her practical jokes than her command skills. Her support of Vedet Brewer (internal) during his short stint as Acting Archon lost her many friends and put a serious doubt in her loyalty to the Lyran crown. Under the close eye of the Third Royal Guards and Angela Barns, Leutnant-Colonel Kern has kept discipline and morale up with her troops, even though their combat effectiveness left to be desired.

Called to Serve

As the Wolf Empire was left wide open, Roderick Steiner (internal) began mobilizing Lyran troops to perform short strikes against the ilClan. To get back in the good graces of the Lyran High Command, Dorothy Kern petitioned to participate in the operation. Not knowing what to expect, Roderick Steiner assigned the 17th Donegal to retake Thuban, a minor world with limited strategic merit.

Facing the remnants of the 279th Wolf Battle Cluster, the 17th Donegal proved they were not ready for service. Faced with almost untrained militias and poorly equipped Clan warriors as the Delta Galaxy unit had basically been sent to Terra, the 17th Donegal still got bogged down and were forced on a back foot after a short campaign. Two battalion of the 3rd Royal were sent to relieve the 17th Donegal and completed taking over the planet almost immediately.

Disgrace and retirement

After the disastrous events of the Thuban campaign, Dorthey Kern was recalled to Tharkad while her troops returned to Donegal in shame. Meeting with Trillian Steiner (internal), Dorthey was given the opportunity to “retire ahead of time”, or be arrested for dereliction of duty. Looking towards her children taking over her family ‘mechs rather than becoming dispossessed, Dorthey Kern retired while Loki agents kept a close eye on her. Trillian Steiner did mention that Kern’s actions on Thuban were not seditious in nature, just a show of absolute incompetence on her part due to mismanaging her unit for so long.
