Overview
The Sentinel had been a successful small Medium ‘Mech for the Star League Defense Force and the member states of the Star League, and a large number of them had been brought with the SLDF in their exile. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), the capabilities of even the Royal version of the Sentinel were under the standard the newborn Clans had needed and most of them were mothballed in Brian Caches.
Clan Cloud Cobra collected as many Sentinels as they could when the caches were reopened by ilKhan McKenna. They quickly realized that the material cost to refurbish them would be quite low while accomplishing “their duty to the Clan”, allowing them to reinvest in other endeavors. What they did not quite expect was how many Sentinels were actually available, which soon flooded their mechyards and overwhelmed their production capacity. Partenering with Clan Hell’s Horses, they offloaded a portion of their Sentinels in exchange for more former SLDF aerospace fighters. The two Clans then started improving on the Sentinel, making sure it would be a successful machine in the upcoming fights against the Inner Sphere.
Capabilities
The Sentinel C keeps the same top speed as the basic model at 96kmph, using a converted Pitban 240 XL as was mounted in the original Royal Sentinels. The armor was replaced with seven tons of ferro-fibrous (compared to the original seven and a half tons) on a reconditionned endo-steel chassis. While this made this ‘mech “expensive”, it was mainly converting the original specifications of the Royal Sentinel into a more modern fighter. The big change came from Clan Cloud Cobra modifying the targeting computer from the original Rifleman and adding a RadDome to the Sentinel, turning the basic Sentinel into a fast, anti-air platform meant to supplement the Rifleman IIC and the Glass Spider.
The Royal Sentinel was already equipped with a Gauss Rifle, which was kept on this new model, allowing it to have fantastic range and destructive power. A nose-mounted Small Pulse Laser allows it to defend itself against infantry, while an ER Medium Laser is viewed as sufficient for point defense against more armored targets. All the weapons are tied to a Targeting Computer for additional precision.
Variants
A variant of the design made by Clan Cloud Cobra replaces the Gauss Rifle with a 10-class LB-X autocannon to be able to fill the air with flak pellets, increasing accuracy against flyers (especially VTOLs) as a trade-off against raw destructive power. With the saved weight, a Streak 2-tubes of SRM is added to the shoulder for anti-tank operations.
Clan Hell’s Horses introduced the Hyper Assault Gauss in 3066 after trying to modify the Federated Commonwealth Heavy Gauss Rifle. Seeing a niche that could be filled, they replaced their Sentinel C gauss rifle with a HAG/20, adding a second shoulder mounted ER Medium laser. As an anti-air platform, it was even better than the original and led most of the other Clans to start trading for their own.
