The following is the design review and expose by Captain Etienne Siroix, Flanagan’s Repair and Refits.

Overview:

‘The number of these machines which came during the attack on Artru, and on other Rimward Alliance key worlds, was rather small, but significant because they were brand new designs altogether.

We expected these to be standard, run-of-the-mill Blakist machines when we pulled them open. Oh boy was I suprised. First, the pilot in the one I have brought here before you literally melting in the pilot chair, barely a day after we brought the ‘Mech down. Accelerated decay on the body, no idea why or

how. Rather than the standard ‘blakist’ small cockpit, the whole assembly was filled with connection wire and ports, and no actual controls. This made a protomech cockpit look sensible.

The local boys started calling the thing the ‘Pea Crab’. The bosses weren’t too happy about that, saying it was too vulgar. The Pea Crab is the smallest crab on Terra, you know. Oh well, it was nicknamed ‘Spider Crab’ after that. You guys decide what to call it among yourselves until I get my hands on the head designer of this thing and strangle him.’

Capabilities:

‘Alright, specs wise, this thing is your average bugmech like the Stinger or the Wasp. 96 kmph, 180 meters jump range, tiny stature so you can probably squeeze them 2 in one ‘Mech bay. Pair of hands for manipulation and punching, nothing special there either.

The armor is basically something similar to Heavy Ferro-Fibrous, but the plating is really weird and uses an alloy I can’t identify. The maximum amount for ‘Mech its size, making those things tougher than your bugmechs at least. It’s got something akin to a Light Active probe tied to a C3 computer I can’t point out if it comes from IBM or Apple. Not your typical C3i either.

It’s not an omnimech, but those ‘shoulder-mounts’ are fully modular and I assume you can swap the weaponry in them pretty quickly. I have no idea what connectors they use and what kind of equipment is supposed to go there, but here’s the 3 we know about:

Medium Laser

The most common version packs a pair of what I can only identify as basic ER Medium Lasers. You don’t get to kill much infantry with that, but it gives it range and power compared to a Wasp, as an example.

SRM

Second one uses what I can only classify as Clan-grade 2-tubes SRM, one on each shoulder. The ammo is in the center torso, not case protected, so 0 care was taken to protect the pilot.

ER Small

Last one we saw was actually a scary one, mounting a pair of ER Small Lasers in the pods. Looks like those are Clan-grade, but some reports and guncam footage tells me some were Inner Sphere grade as well? No clue what they are doing.’

Battle History:

‘Biggest block of those blokes we saw was on Echo Ruby Ridge. A group of 4 of those things were following around a Beowulf. One of our pursuit lance spotted them and gave chase. The Beowulf just kept running away while the 4 Pea crabs… I’m sorry Spider Crab just suicide ran into one of our Mongoose and Locust. When I say that, it’s literal. Reckless charge, shooting all their weapons, 0 survival instinct. They chewed up our own scouts by the time the Flying Badgers got into range and blew them away. Couldn’t get that Beowulf, unfortunately.’

Additional:

‘Those seem to follow the same design philosophy as some of the other ‘Mechs the Blakists brought, the much larger ‘Snow Crab’ being the first of the group. Very crab-like, same mono-eye sensor array in the front, same ‘pilot smells of death after a day’.

The other one we started calling ‘Jouster’. PPC on one arm, some missiles on the torsos, same mono-eye array. Those came in two completely different body kits, I’ll show them to you later.’
