Overview:
Named after legendary ilKhan Leo Showers, the OZ (Operation Zeta)-06 Leo was in development for the Fidelis forces of the Republic of the Sphere. The design was acquired by Clan Wolf after the Battle of Terra. Quickly completing the prototypes and finishing up the production facility in Greenland, the Smoke Jaguars received the first delivery of these units for their fight against the Capellan Confederation
While not an OmniMech, the Leo’s “gun mount” and attending equipment can be replaced by a tech crew in only a matter of hours, using omnimech gyro controls rather than standard BattleMech calibration. While there was a desire to make the Leo a true omnimech, the fact the machine remained amazingly low-cost and easy to produce won in the end.
Capabilities:
The OZ-06 Leo is as simple and easy to build as possible, outside of its 12 tons of ferro-lamellor armor which was settled upon in order to protect the design. Using a standard Magna 250 engine comparable to the one used in old Star League Crabs, the Leo can go up to 86kmph, while 5 jump jets lets it jump 150 meters.
The right torso is equipped with CASE II to protect any ammo which might be required for weapons on the design.
The only weapon that is “hard-mounted” on the OZ-06 Leo are shoulder-mounted ER Medium lasers. This gives the machine some ability to fight at medium range at all time. Afterwards, the “gun-mount” of the Leo is where the main gun of the various Leo will be. Here is a list of the standard, known configurations:
RAC/5: The gun mount is a large, rifle-style rapid-fire autocannon. Many pilots complain that the limited ammo for the Rotary Autocannon 5 limits the design, however.
LB10-X: This gun mount is a larger, shoulder mounted “field gun” LB-10X, capable of shooting both clusters and solid slugs.
HAG/20: This gun mount is a “bazooka” style Hyper Assault Gauss-20, ideal for taking out flying targets.
Dual ER Large Laser: A pair of ER Large lasers, mounted in a rifle-style mount. To help with the heat situation, 4 extra heat sinks are mounted in lieu of ammunition.
Brawler: This specialized design carries a “heavy pistol” featuring a Heavy Large Laser and extra heat sinks. A Hatchet is carried in the opposite arm.
LRM: This gun mount is a “rocket box” with 2 15-rack LRMs with Artemis guidance. 3 tons of ammo should be enough to keep this design in the field.
Battle History:
The Leo faced the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces from the beginning of the Capellan – Star League War. CCAF officers were confused by the simple design being used in large quantities by the former Fidelis forces. Believing it to be an OmniMech at first, the Maskirovka captured as many as they could to decipher the design. Their surprise at the simplicity of the hand-held weapon system led
them to give instruction to Ceres to start testing similar designs.
On the actual front, the Leo served admirably both as a front-line and second-line unit. Through experimentation, additional designs and weapon systems were requested and developped. By the end of the Capellan – Star League war, 2 more full variants were released using different armor type, one
featuring an integral partial wing.
Variants:
A small number of Leo’s have the shoulder-mounted lasers taken out to increase the ammunition for the main gun.
To improve on defense, some OZ-06 Leo have their shoulder mounter lasers removed to instead mount a small shield on the arm opposite the main gun.
A “simpler” design using Ferro-fibrous armor (9 tons) exists and has been promoted as an export model. Many of these have a built in Sword and Light Active Probe mounted in the head using the saved weight.
Some ferro-fibrous models skip the sword and install the small shield in the opposite arm, and use a full scale Active Probe instead of the Light active probe.
A version using a Partial Wing and ferro-fibrous armor has been shown, with Clan Jade Falcon being a potential customer.
OZ-06 Leo Quirks:
- Easy to Maintain
- Fast Reload
- Ubiquitous
