Overview:

The origin of the Flying Badger comes from the Griffins and Wolverines which were produced on Coromodir and Guldra, in the Aurigan Trade Alliance. Both machines were produced in large amounts to build up the military force of the Alliance, but also for export to other periphery powers and the Federated Suns. This led local engineering firm, Flanagan’s Repairs and Refit, to start fiddling with the design to try to make both of them more polyvalent and easy to repair.

Omnitechnology was a breakthrough which allowed this to happen, but due to limited understanding of the technology before the 3070s, the project was mainly centered around prototypes and speciality weapons platforms. With the close association of FRaR and Clan Sea Fox at the start of the 31st Century,
the design moved from prototyping into full production, with the variants each being ‘setup’ to imitate the members of the so-called 275 mafia or as support unit.

Keeping the cost low and production simple was an important factor for the periphery states which bought into the weapons program, while the design used ‘cutting-edge technology’. Early variants used standard Inner Sphere parts on a ‘Clan-graded’ chassis which was somewhat easier to produce using FRaR production capacity, but by the 3150s, any new podkit was 100% Clan-graded, most weapons coming out of Aurigan Armored Industries, Flanagan’s Repair and Refits or Yung’s Weaponries.

Capabilities:

Not the most ‘efficient’ of omnimechs, the Flying Badger is meant to be reliable, easy to repair with parts available and easy to deploy in most situations. It features a very common CoreTek 275 engine to reach speeds of up to 86kmph, combined with a Griffin’s Rawlings-55 jump jets, allowing it to jump 150 meters. While the skeleton is made of endo-steel to save on weight, it also uses 9 tons of Clan-graded ferro-fibrous to have very good armor coverage. Each side torso features an integral CASE II ammo bin. This leaves 17 tons of pod space for weapons, which Clan analysts will find limited, but Inner Sphere and
Periphery designers see as more than enough.

Flying Badger Deployment:

During the Battle of Terra, a group of Flying Badgers had been delivered to Clan Wolf by Clan Sea Fox for testing and approval, many of which performed remarkably well due to their toughness and ease of repair in a continually shifting environment.

During the War of the Reaches, most Aurigan and Taurian regiments featured a large number of Flying Badgers, with any lost Shadow Hawk, Wolverine and Griffin being replaced with a more modern omni variant as soon as possible.

With the formation of the Rimward Alliance, the Flying Badger became the de-facto standard medium trooper/cavalry ‘mech of the entire group, which they used against Capellan assets at first, along with putting pressure on the Magistracy of Canopus and Duchy of Andurien.

Flying Badger Variants:

The Prime configuration mimics the Griffin, using an ER PPC in a gun-mount, opposite of which is mounted an ATM-9 with 3 tons of reloads. The head mount is equipped with an ER Medium laser.

Alpha Configuration mimics the Wolverine, with a 2-tons fed Ultra AC/5 in the gun-mount. The opposite shoulder to the rifle mounts a Streak 6-tubes SRM, while the head mount has a Medium Pulse Laser. The arm without the autocannon features a pair of Small Pulse Lasers.

The Flying Badger Bravo is a configuration designed by commitee at Flanagan’s Repair and Refits. It features an ATM-9 on each shoulder, 6 tons of reloads and a Micro Pulse Laser on each arm.

Charlie configuration tries to mimic the Shadow Hawk, with a LB-5X autocannon over the shoulder, backed by an ER Medium Laser on the right arm. A Streak 2-tubes SRM is in the head mount while a 10-rack LRM over the opposite shoulder. A Micro Pulse laser rounds things up on the left arm, to serve against infantry.

Delta configuration of the Flying Badger is a custom brawler, with an Improved Heavy Large Laser slung over each shoulder, a massive cleaver in the left hand and 5 extra heat sinks.

Echo configuration came out of a commander losing his Kintaro in an operation. Each shoulder mounts a Streak 6-tubes SRM, while the right arm has a Streak 5-rack LRM. The opposite arm features a pair of ER Medium lasers, while the head mount is equipped with an ER Large laser.

Additional:

Earlier “Inner Sphere” configurations are no longer available for purchase, but it is possible to find them floating around the rim ward periphery, Federated Suns and Timbuktu Collective.
